SUMMARY:The science and politics of Critical Zone *** at 14:00 ***
DESCRIPTION:Jérôme Gaillardet\, Professor of geochemistry of the Earth’s surface processes\, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris. \n\n\n\nFor online (live) attendance: https://live.epog.eu \n\n\n\nFor the replay: https://videos.epog.eu \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Critical Zone is the thin pellicle of the Earth’s surface that hosts life and societies. This is actually the human’s habitat. Named after a recent scientific initiative coming from Earth scientists\, the science of the critical zone aims at reconnecting disciplines of experimental and natural sciences and moving forward a more holistic approach. Critical Zone science is place-based and uses networks of instrumented field sites. The natural objects making the critical zone (soils\, rivers\, aquifers…) are also political entities offering a new perspective on how to invent a more sustainable relationship of humans with to the planet. \n\n\n\nArènes\, A.\, Latour\, B.\, & Gaillardet\, J. SUMMARY:Ordinary environmentalisms: mobilizations and spaces
DESCRIPTION:Nathalie Blanc\, Senior researcher in geography\, Université de Paris and CNRS\, Centre des politiques de la terre\, Laboratoire Dynamiques sociales et recomposition des espaces (LADYSS\, CNRS\, UMR 7533). \n\n\n\nFor online (live) attendance: https://live.epog.eu \n\n\n\nFor the replay: https://videos.epog.eu \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will qualify ordinary environmentalism\, the role of civil society and individual and collective mobilizations\, more or less informal\, said to be environmental in various local political configurations. A first objective is to broaden the understanding of the forms and practices of environmentalism\, by shifting the gaze towards mobilizations that are often invisible or invisible\, although they have a substantial impact on the urban environment. A second objective is to analyze the role of this environmentalism in a renewal of the territories\, as in the transformation of political behavior in these territories. We will examine the way in which these mobilizations contribute to renewing the implementation of local policies\, and more broadly\, through the swarming of concrete experiments\, the understanding of what politics and policies mean. \n\n\n\nLoftus\, A.\, 2012\, Everyday environmentalism: Creating an urban political ecology\, University of Minnesota Press\, Minneapolis Ernstson\, H.\, Sörling\, S. DESCRIPTION:Christophe Goupil\, Professor of physics\, Université de Paris\, Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire des Energies de Demain (LIED\, CNRS UMR 8236). \n\n\n\nFor online (live) attendance: https://live.epog.eu \n\n\n\nFor the replay: https://videos.epog.eu \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAsserting that the question of energy is central to the future of our society is obvious to all those who note the strong link between GDP and energy consumption. We can decide to deny this fact but then we have to de-centralise the energy of the physical world and turn it into a purely financial quantity. This is not the objective of this course. In its original definition\, energy is the currency that makes it possible to account for the transformations of matter. In this course\, following this definition\, you will be proposed to explore the concept of energy\, both in its historical development and in its disciplinary developments\, particularly in physics\, biology and economics. \n\n\n\nHerman E. Agroecology should thus use ecological knowledge to decrease the use of inputs (pesticides\, fertilizer\, and energy) and to exploit ecological processes instead. \n\n\n\nGliessman\, S. SUMMARY:The new challenges of “natural” disaster risk reduction in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Maud Devès\, Associate professor in environment\, risks and natural distasters\, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris\, Centre des politiques de la terre. \n\n\n\nLive attendance online is exceptionally unavailable. \n\n\n\nFor the replay: https://videos.epog.eu \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe category of “natural disasters” classically refers to events such as floods\, droughts\, earthquakes\, tsunamis\, volcanic eruptions\, forest fires\, etc. Because they were caused by hydrological\, meteorological or geophysical phenomena\, these risks were for a long time approached from a perspective borrowing from the scientific disciplines dedicated to the study of hydrological\, meteorological or geophysical hazards. But recent history has shown that it is no longer possible to adopt this point of view. The challenges of the Anthropocene (population growth\, increased interconnectivity of natural and socio-technical systems) reconfigure the way these risks impact our societies and force us to reinvent the modalities of their scientific monitoring and public management. \n\n\n\nBeck\, U. 1999.
